On the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes #GivingTuesday, a charitable holiday fueled by the power of the global social media community that takes place this year on November 29. Kicking off the charitable giving season, #GivingTuesday aims to unite communities around the world in order to accomplish one goal: to celebrate and encourage giving. In 2015, #GivingTuesday raised $116.7 million online from over 700,000 donors in 71 countries. This year, the holiday is projected to raise over $250 million in total donations.

Individuals and organizations can participate in many ways, such as taking an (UN)selfie, sharing a #MyGivingStory, organizing volunteer projects, or creating fundraising goals to encourage people to give by the time #GivingTuesday rolls around. We have rounded up a list of organizations who have ramped up their #GivingTuesday strategies by harnessing the power of social media to interact with their donors and share their stories.

Women’s Housing Coalition
The Women’s Housing Coalition is an organization that provides affordable housing and supportive services to women and children in Baltimore City. Founded in 1979, the Women’s Housing Coalition has helped countless women get back on their feet by providing parenting classes, budgeting assistance, and referrals to employment programs, mental health services, and individual and family counseling.

This year, the Women’s Housing Coalition will be participating in the #GivingTuesday movement by encouraging people to share their personal experiences and stories of how they were impacted by the organization using the hashtag #IheartWHC on social media. Volunteers can participate by planning and cooking a holiday meal, leading exercise programs, or by contributing any other skill that would be helpful to the cause. Businesses can take part by sponsoring a fundraiser, a workshop, or a special event.

On last year’s #GivingTuesday, the Women’s Health Coalition raised $7,121, over $2,000 more than their original goal. This year, they hope to engage the community even more in order to help raise awareness of the experience of homelessness for women and children in inner cities.

American Autism Association
Founded in 2010, the American Autism Association is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide support to individuals and families affected by autism. The organization offers free of cost workshops and therapeutic recreational programs, promotes awareness of the challenges that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder face, and supports autism research. Part of their therapeutic recreational programs includes the Ballet for All Kids program, which fosters the development and enhancement of motor, social, and behavioral skills of children on the autism spectrum.

This #GivingTuesday, their goal is to raise enough money to host Ballet for All Kids in New York City year round. If they meet their goal, the funds will support and provide over fifteen children in New York City with this program free of cost. They are encouraging supporters to take an (UN)selfie with their pledge, and share it with the community with the hashtag #MyAutism. All gifts must be sent on November 29, and all participants will receive a Thank You bracelet for all #GivingTuesday contributions.

Learning to Give
Learning to Give is an organization that equips K-12 teachers to educate youth about philanthropy and aims to empower youth to take action for the common good in their classrooms, lives, and communities. Learning to Give provides resources and curriculums in order for teachers to encourage their students to use their talents and skills to make a difference.

This year, Learning to Give is getting involved with the #GivingTuesday movement by encouraging teachers to “TeachOne” lesson from Learning to Give on November 29. Teachers must substitute a lesson for a Learning to Give lesson plan for their grade level and subject area, TeachOne lesson about service and citizen participation, and share their experience through Twitter using the hashtag #teach1. The goal for this year is to spark classroom conversations about the environment and the clean water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
