Product Updates: WebService
Customization available on both the Advanced Search and the History Results pages:
- Change the giving history and age amounts when you recalculate results on the History and Advanced
Search Results pages. You can also add supplemental rating information, such as additional real estate or
other gift knowledge by clicking on the plus sign on the right side of the Results page under “Giving
Capacity Report” and “Supplemental Rating Information.”
- Delete a report within the results and then hit the Recalculate button for a revised answer. This is
especially useful for reports that are not important to your research or for multiple reports.
Improvements to the History Section:
- Search match sources within your history section. For example, find out who you have researched that has made
Federal Campaign Contributions, or has company information from D&B. This option is available under “Optional
Rating Criteria,” titled “Match Criteria.”
- The History folder now shows: influence & inclination, planned giving scores (bequest, annuity & trust)
and investment rating.

“Development is all about developing relationships with people. In our modern world, you need a solid way of
keeping track of donors. Development, done well, goes beyond logging in gifts and getting out acknowledgement
letters,” says Susan Packard Orr, Founder & CEO of Telosa Software, Inc.
Orr should certainly know, as she’s lived a lifetime of philanthropy. She notes, “In my family, I basically grew
up thinking about philanthropy, and I’ve learned leadership from a volunteer’s perspective.” She is currently
Chairman of the Board at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and is a trustee of Stanford University, the
Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health
and the Packard Humanities Institute.
As a result, both of Telosa’s products – Exceed! Premier and Exceed! Basic – are designed to meet the needs of
development offices and to help both staff and volunteers succeed at their fundraising efforts. Exceed! Premier
is a complete and full featured fundraising software which supports virtually all development needs. Exceed!
Basic is designed for small to mid-sized nonprofits – and, while it offers excellent features, it is a bargain at
$499.
Orr shares why she is excited that Telosa and WealthEngine are partnering. She says, “Donors will, for the most
part, come from the group of people who have a special concern about your mission – people who share your values.
So, whenever you are developing a major fundraising campaign, you need to connect the values of prospective donors
to your organization. WealthEngine really gives an organization the tools they need to make this connection.”
Orr counsels that organizations should “put away their tin cups” and listen to the advice of Kay Sprinkel Grace in
her book, Beyond Fund Raising. Grace emphasizes the importance of understanding
and developing “the three C’s” in any donor relationship. Orr shares with readers ways that WealthEngine’s
products help address “the three C’s.”
- Concern – Major gifts are most likely to come from those who have a deep concern for your organization’s
mission. WealthEngine profiles include information such as a prospect’s board memberships, to which
organizations they make other major gifts, and clues as to reasons for their interest in your
organization.
- Connection – It is important to know what existing connections a prospect has to your organization.
Through WealthEngine’s Circle of Friends, a development staff member or volunteer can glean a lot of
information. For example, the Circle of Friends data might tell you which of the prospect’s family
members or close friends are somehow linked to your organization.
- Capacity – WealthEngine screenings also provide a giving capacity rating, which gives a staff member or
volunteer a context from which to work when making a solicitation.
Orr offers a couple of pieces of advice for readers, based on her experiences. First, she says, “Make sure you
connect with people, and it needs to be the value connection. Have your ears open all the time. Pick up on
every indication that they might give. Listen to find out what a prospect feels is important. And, understand
where your organization fits in.”
“Also, remember that you are building a long-term relationship. Development is really stewardship. Getting the
gift is the first step in the relationship. After that, it’s making the relationship into a partnership,”
concludes Orr.

Client News: Oxfam, "WealthEngine Helps Zero In on Prospects"
Claire Frances, Major Gifts Research Officer for Oxfam America, is no stranger to prospect research and the many prospect
research tools available to fundraisers for nonprofit organizations around the world. Throughout her more than
eight years with Oxfam, Frances had used Wealth ID for its wealth estimator and other information.
Then, when WealthEngine and Wealth ID merged in the summer of 2005, Frances became a regular user – and fan – of
WealthEngine. Initially, she had a screening done of all donors who had given $25 or more to Oxfam. Now, she
does periodic updates of the new donors.
“WealthEngine allows us to zero in on a prospect in a more timely and efficient manner,” explains Frances. She
gives us some examples:
- When Oxfam hosts an event in a particular city, the development staff uses the screenings to identify
invitees for that event.
- Oxfam targets certain donors for more marketing, based on the screenings. For example, perhaps a donor has
made only one $500 contribution to Oxfam, but the screenings indicates the ability to make a much larger
gift.
- Oxfam development staff use the DM scores when planning direct mail campaigns.
“We also have the best sales rep with WealthEngine,” notes Frances. “Bill Tedesco is honest and does a lot for us.
WealthEngine always goes the extra mile.”
Frances concludes, “WealthEngine is the best in the industry for what an organization gets for its money. No
other company in the prospect-research business offers what WealthEngine does for the same amount of money.”
Questions and Answers:
Q: I’ve noticed a new icon labeled “Export Option” in the
History section of my Research Center account. How can I use this feature?
A: The Export Option was created to allow users to easily export search results from searches
stored in their History section of their Research Center account. Here is how to use this function:
- Go to the History section of your Research Center account.
- Run a query based upon the criteria you would like to export, perhaps by Portfolio, Estimated Capacity, or
DM Score and click “Search.”
- Once in the query results, place a checkmark in the box to the left of the records you would like to
export. If you would like to export all of the records in your query use the “Select All” option on the
top left-hand side of the frame.
- Now click on the “Export Options” link on the far right-hand side of the History page. A new window
will pop up and provide you with options on the Layout, Format and Records to export.
- Make your selections and click on “Export.” A new window will pop up, and notify you that your export has
been run successfully.
- Click on the icon “Download Export File.” You may either open the file directly or save it to your
computer.

Staff Profile: Stuart Entwistle, Vice President of Sales
Stuart Entwistle currently serves as Vice President of Sales with WealthEngine.com, having joined the company in
2003. Stuart’s career, however, is rooted in fundraising. As a result, Stuart’s deep understanding and
appreciation for the challenges faced by development officers has enhanced his ability to present the
WealthEngine.com products and services to the nonprofit community.
Stuart’s background includes nearly six years as the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations with Catholic
Relief Services, a large international overseas relief and development agency. Following that, Stuart worked for
five years with the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland as the Director of Development and Communications where he had a
special focus on building an annual campaign and launching a capital campaign. He was then recruited to work with
the Washington, D.C. based National Prostate Cancer Coalition, an advocacy and awareness organization.
It was while Stuart was with the Diocese of Maryland that he first became a WealthEngine client. He engaged
WealthEngine again while with the National Prostate Cancer Coalition.
“My enthusiasm in sharing the WealthEngine.com products with development professionals is born out of the fact
that I saw first-hand how the tools brought immediate and quantifiable results to all phases of my
fundraising efforts,” says Stuart. “WealthEngine helped me “professionalize” my overall development
operation as well as build a confidence within my entire development team -- volunteers included -- that we
were engaging our donors and prospects in an appropriate and thoughtful manner.”
Stuart works from an office in Baltimore where he lives with his wife and three children. In his free time, he
enjoys playing golf and doing anything that takes him to the outdoors.
