Staff Profile: Steve Knight, WealthEngine Client Service Manager

As a WealthEngine Client Service Manager, Steve Knight works with a portfolio of large nonprofits and institutions of higher education, addressing their implementation, training, and development strategy needs. He brings over ten years of experience in philanthropy and prospect research to assist his clients in their fundraising success.

Steve sees his role as an extension to his client’s development team. “I truly love working in the nonprofit world. For me, professional satisfaction has always been about fulfilling the philanthropic mission of my organization. With WealthEngine, I now get to be a small part of so many great philanthropic missions. It is extremely satisfying to work with so many clients who are doing so much good work.”

Prior to joining WealthEngine in 2008, Steve was Assistant Director of Research, Strategic Initiatives at the University of Florida Foundation for five years. He began his career in philanthropy as Information Analysis Manager at the American Cancer Society, Florida Division, and later served as Assistant Director of Research at the University of South Florida Foundation. Early in his career, Steve worked in various capacities with local government, and as a submarine communications specialist in the US Navy.

Steve is an active member of and regular presenter with the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) International and APRA Florida. He currently serves on the APRA International Ethics Committee, and was Volunteer Co-Chair for both the 2006 & 2007 annual APRA International Conferences.

Steve’s focus on how organizations use their prospect research data to enhance the prospect/donor relationship has led him to speak nationally on the ethical use of information gathered in the research process at both APRA and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) conferences. He is also the author of an article in APRA’s Winter 2009 newsletter, entitled “Advancement Research Ethics and the Social Media Explosion.”

Steve sees the advent of social media as significantly changing the landscape of what is private and what is public, and that it is important for nonprofits to carefully balance how such information is used to develop and protect relationships. He states, “Whether you are evaluating your ethics policy or improving your social media use for fundraising, remember that in the end…it is all about the respect and value of the relationship with your donors and prospects.”
