This session will cover the convergence of ethics, technology and fundraising related to today’s popular social media sites. Many organizations use social networking to research donors, promote events, causes, and support online fundraising through sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Jumo, LinkedIn and YouTube. Due to how readily available and easily accessible pictures, videos, and other personal information are online, many ethical boundaries come into question. We’ll discuss how to interpret and protect donor and prospect information gathered from social networking sites as well as how information gleamed from photos and videos accessed on the web may be used. We’ll also discuss what information from social networking sites shouldn’t be included in official prospect or donor records for your institution.
