WealthEngine continues to build its collection of charitable donations each month including charitable gifts, Federal Election Contributions and State Political Donation records. The database is one of the largest, most current charitable donations databases in the country, with more than 54 million records. Remarkably, some giving data traces back to 1871, however, the majority of these records cover more recent years with a focus on larger, more meaningful donations that can help inform cultivation strategy and ask amounts.

WealthEngine’s Charitable Donations consists of publically-available donor lists published by the nation’s largest nonprofit organizations, as well as those nonprofits who have elected to participate in WealthEngine’s ongoing crowdsourcing project by sharing their annual reports. In addition to displaying the type, amount, and year of the gift, this database also lists the recipient organization’s name, location, and areas of focus.

A key difference between WealthEngine’s Charitable Donations and other available donations databases is the quality of the data. Rather than post hundreds of thousands of small donations (under $100), WealthEngine typically adds gifts $1,000 and higher. This helps reduce the potential for mismatched data (imagine the number of John Smith’s with $25 gifts in your community) and provides a higher, more reliable value as you research your best donors and prospects for gift capacity.

One way to benefit from a more robust database in your community or service area is to participate in the crowdsourcing project. The beauty of crowdsourcing is that every individual benefits from the contributions of the entire crowd – in this case, that includes all 3,500+ WealthEngine clients – who can easily upload either their, or other nonprofit’s, annual reports via FindWealth Online or send them via snail mail. The turnaround time for posting the data is approximately three weeks. Hundreds of clients have participated—we even had one client provide a collection of 250 annual reports! For them, boosting the donation data for their state helped them better understand major gift prospects and the breadth of community involvement and philanthropy.
