Assistant Director of Donor Communications, Communications and Donor Relations, Tufts University

The mission of University Advancement is to secure financial resources in support of the University and its educational and research missions; to cultivate alumni, parents and friends of the University through programs held on and off campus that enhance connections among constituents and with Tufts; and to promote philanthropy and volunteerism in support of Tufts. The Office of the Executive Director of Development oversees the fund raising strategy and action plans of all school-based development groups of the university and central interdisciplinary programs (such as Tisch College, Hillel, the Institute for Global Leadership, the Tufts Financial Network affinity group), and principal and leadership gifts.

The Assistant Director of Donor Communications serves as the donor relations and stewardship point person for the executive director of development's principal and leadership gift donors for non-school-based group. She/he will assist this group of directors in creating and implementing cultivation, solicitation and stewardship communications for major and principal gift donors, and proactively managing their cultivation and stewardship needs over time.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Development, the Assistant Director of Donor Communications will liaise with Advancement Communications, Stewardship and Special Events regularly to ensure consistency and integration of communication strategies, messaging and events across the division. He/she will craft donor and prospect communications and design donor relations activities such as events, reports, impact statements, acknowledgments and stewardship activities that create strong relationships between these major donors and prospects, and the university. She/he will also draft and often complete proposals and gift agreements, the preparation of provost acknowledgments and briefings, and select acknowledgments and briefings for the president.

The Assistant Director of Donor Communications will participate in strategy sessions with the Executive Director and his principal gift group. She/he will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Advancement Communications and Donor Relations protocols established for the provost's office. He/she will serve on the development committee that meets regularly with the Dean of Tisch College, and support solicitation and recognition programs using a variety of media. To be successful in sustaining and nurturing relationships among donors, the Assistant Director of Donor Communications will need to work closely with administrators across the university, gift officers, faculty, students and volunteers.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three plus (3+) years of professional experience in development, customer relations, marketing or public relations
  • Experience using the software programs of Microsoft Office Suite (with particular proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint; must have the ability to learn and work with Sunguard BSR (Donor Relations Database)
  • Exceptional written communication skills are required
  • Demonstrated familiarity with best practices and trends in donor relations programs and approaches
  • Organization and accuracy in work and attention to detail and strong follow-through on tasks are essential
  • Must have ability to set priorities and deadlines, and juggle multiple demands

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with ADVANCE or similar relational, complex database is desirable.

Special Work Schedule Requirements: On occasion, this employee will need to be present at Tufts events involving donors and prospects that take place after hours or on weekends.
